I love when apparently Deep questions turn out to have clear empirical answers.
Sometimes I share inspiring words and think very seriously on super important topics. Sometimes I share ridiculous humor and think way too seriously on silly pop culture.

“Victorians were stuffy prudes.”
PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PEOPLE
I absolutely love this! Whenever we think back to this time period we always assume the people then to be almost emotionless. We always portray them as serious and uptight but have seem to have forgotten that they are people too. They are complex and enjoyed their lives. They are more than the 2D images we have chosen to represent them and it’s beautiful to see images that show them as the opposite of what we have portrayed them to be!

…holy shit
None of the characters ever figure this out because they stop taking math at age 11
If you did this I’m pretty sure the goblins would break into your house and kill you.
Why on earth would the goblins allow you to just bring in metal and have it minted and then give that metal back to you. You can’t just show up at a bank with some linen and have it made into dollar bills. Not to mention the extreme likelihood that the Galleons are all cursed so that if anyone does try to melt them down, it sets off a huge ‘this person is Fucking With Currency’ sign in fireworks above your head that’s also made of bees? The goblins were cheerfully willing to leave robbers locked in a vault for ten years, they have no reason to be nice about this.
Ah, but that relies on modern currency being fiat where, excluding pennies, the face value is greater than the material used.
Gringotts is issuing hard currency backed, afaict, on the metal value. The face value being significantly less than the commodity value is a serious problem–nevermind that it was common in the real world to shave precious metal coins to sell the metal separately.
The key is not minting new coins with gold. Rather, there must be some exchange between the human and wizard economies on account of muggleborn and others who operate in both worlds. You sell your gringotts gold for fiat currency, then trade that back for a significantly greater value of goods you can sell to fellow wizards for an enormous profit.
Basically, wizards are use an archaic and non-functional currency
Replace “currency” with almost any other word and it’s probably correct.
There’s no reason whatsoever to assume that knuts and sickles are bullion just because they’re made from actual metal. *Wizards all learn transmutation in grade school.*
They’re a clear sendup of pre-decimalization pounds and shillings– a fiat currency that evolved from bullion via minting restrictions. They showed exactly the property being discussed here, a fossilized gold/silver ratio from hundreds of years past.

Where the fuck do you think I live, numbnuts?
I feel like this anon is one of those Peak Yankees™ who thinks of “Rural South™” as a mystical, far-away place that exists on TV but where nobody actually lives
I grew up on a goddamn farm in a rural town of less than 200 people. I spent ten years living in southern Mississippi. I now live 20 minutes away from that original rural town of less than 200 people.
And yet people still assume I don’t know what the south is like, Jesus fucking Christ.
Is this where I tell everyone that the insult yelled in my school’s hallways was always just the word “gay,” but I would never censor the word gay, or is that too much for y’all to comprehend?
Ivory-tower Tumblr progressives getting fake mad and doing the wokey-pokey: “Ah, but have you considered…The Rural South™???”
Me, a big queer and an hillbilly, looking up from picking muscadines as IWW leaflets fall out of my jeans: “The hell y'all city folk on about this time?”
